Just been checking some mail and I get a vast amount of "Please moderate the comments for your website...." and as I've a few websites which I kinda maintain, you know, the occassional post and the like, spam.jpgI do like to keep my eye on what's happening on my site, curious about the visitors (or lack of) on my site. And comments - I love 'em, but I get precious few so I do notice when new comments are posted and since I've got to moderate them (i.e. approve them before they get posted on site) I get to read them all, unfortunately, the vast majority are SPAM, so here's a handy hint for all you spammers out there - just don't bother, I'm not going to approve your comments, and if you're comment isn't in English it won't be approved anyway - it's an English speaking site so I won't post comments I can't read, nor comments that just don't make sense, feel free to rip the pish out of me or my site, I'm a big boy and I can take it, lol, but seriously everyone's entitled to an opinion so if you want to comment, positively or negatively then that's fair enough, just don't spam me!

Monday, the last day in London for us, we got up again at 7:30, showered and Caitlyn and I went off to breakfast, it's a joy having breakfast prepared and having no dishes to worry about! It was check out day too, so we were a bit later leaving the hotel as we'd to pack our bags and take them with us before heading off. I also nipped out before we left and bought a padded envelope and a couple of stamps - Marlyn had her hairspray and mousse confiscated at the airport on the way down, so we thought we'd be smart and post them home - unfortunately, it seems only post offices would be able to accept them (all the post boxes in London seem to be altered so only letters will fit through the slot!) and it being a public holiday all the post offices were shut! C'est la vie.

We decided to visit Harrods, if only for a look so after our morning coffee at Starbucks, we headed off and took the tube to Kensington. Harrods was just outside the entrance to the tube so it was easy to find! Wasn't quite so easy to get into though, I'd only just stepped in the door and a security guard approached and told me I couldn't come in carrying the bags I had! He did tell me I could drop the bags off at the Main entrance and collect them when I was done, but we decided it wasn't worth the hassle and left at that, making for St. Paul's Cathederal. It was easy enough to get to - simply onto the underground and get of a St. Pauls station, then five minutes walk to get to it (And a wee personal note here, all weekend we used the underground and public transport and found it absolutely excellent, convinient and more or less hassle free, even though some lines were closed and sometimes it was a bit crowded but I wish there was public transport like that at home! Jeez, I think Londoner's are so lucky to have such a good public transport system, I'd love to be able to jump on a train and get to work in 30 minutes rather than have an hours drive each way!). Anyway, back to the trip - St Paul's cathedral was pretty impressive (from the outside - they wanted around £25 admission for the 3 of us, so we decided against it). We got some M&S sandwiches and some drinks and had a wee picnic lunch in Paternoster square, with The dome of St. Paul's visible, the sun was shining and we'd a nice seat, my only complaint - no litter bins!! (Surprisingly, it was really tidy and litter free even though there were no bins!). So after munching, we walked around St. Paul's and headed for the Millennium bridge, where we took a walk over it and saw "The Globe" theatre and the Tate Modern Gallery, after a couple of photo opportunities, it was time to head for Heathrow. We'd plenty time when we got there, so Caitlyn made a bee line for "Game", where she blew the remainder of her spending money on a couple of DS games - money well spent IMHO, it was the quietest she'd been all weekend! Even got a Harrod's bag for Marlyn - there's a Harrod's at Heathrow! Then, most importantly, a coffee for Marlyn and I and, of course, a tea for Caitlyn and a seat for us all. All too soon, our flight was called and it was back to normality. But, when all's said and done, we'd a great weekend, we'd seen lots of London and had great fun doing so - just a pity we didn't see Leigh, maybe next time??

The alarm went off at 7:30 and we were woken to the sound of Lemmy's dulcet tones, giving a rousing rendition of "Ace of Spades", one of Motorhead's finest tunes! After I'd had a quick shower, Caitlyn had one and we then dressed and went downstairs for breakfast, leaving Marlyn to get ready and have a bit of peace and quiet. We both enjoyed breakfast, I'd a coffee (x3), glass of orange, cereal, croissant and yogurt, whilst Caitlyn went for Tea and pain au chocolat (well, think she'd half a dozen, but in her defence they were only bite sized!). We took a coffee and croissant back to our room for Marlyn and discussed what we wanted to do - we'd made no plans for Saturday but wanted to do a little sightseeing so decided to start at the tower of London, so that was the plan. We left the hotel and headed for Hammersmith underground, fortunately re-opened after the previous night's fire. We stopped at Starbuck's for a coffee and had a quick look at our wee street map, before deciding to head for The Tower of London and then Buckingham Palace.

We were heading for Tower Hill underground but it being a holiday weekend, the tube was subject to engineering works and it seemed like there was disruptions everywhere and though 2 lines go direct from Hameersmith to Tower Hill, they weren't operating! So we'd to take the Picadilly line, then change line's a few times. We made it to Bank station and decided to take a walk from there towards the tower - as it happens it turned out quite well, we discovered the Monument to the Great Fire of London, then London Bridge (and it wasn't falling down!) and the Thames Walkway - we went from London Bridge to the Tower of London via the walkway. It turned out to be quite a short walk, 5 or 10 minutes from London Bridge to The Tower, passing HMS Belfast and getting a good view of Tower Bridge too. We saw the tower, learned a bit about Henry VIII (and his wives - now there's a few unlucky ladies!) but I didn't see a raven! On the way back, we decided to get off the tube at Green Park and take a walk to Buckingham Palace, Liz was in (well there was a flag out so I guess she was) but we didn't see her - and we missed the changing of the guard too. We found out it happens every day at 11:30, so thought we might come back and see it happening the following day. Then we got back on track (well, on tube) and headed for Hammersmith, where we joined the Colonel for some Dinner, it's been a while since I had a KFC but I must admit it was enjoyable, then we took a little walk around Hammersmith, not looking fo ranything in particular, just seeing what we could see. We walked about for a bit, heading roughly for the Hotel, where we all had an early night once again (though with all the early nights I wasn't feeling the benefit - the bed was awful, I went to bed feeling fine and woke up with a sore back!)

Once more a rude awakening, courtesy of Motorhead, at 7:30am. Still, after getting to London for the weekend, no point wasting it all sleeping during the day, so I jumped into the shower and Caitlyn followed whilst I was getting dressed. After Caitlyn was ready, Marlyn got showered and Caitlyn and I did the breakfast thing, much the same as yesterday! We had a nice breakfast and remembered a coffee for Marlyn once again. We left the hotel and again headed for Hammersmith tube, via Starbucks, of course, then after a large, strong coffee we were ready for the day! First was a trip to Buckingham Palace, we'd decided to head for the changing of the guard and got there about 10:45 - a whole 3/4 hour early! Even so, there was a large crowd gathering but we were early enough to get a great view of the proceedings and come 11:30 it was mobbed, we saw a couple of bands marching into the Palace and half a dozen soldiers marching out, then a friendly Policeman told us the soldiers who marched out would make there way to Horseguard's Parade and come back in about an hour. At that Caitlyn mentioned she was bored, so thinking we'd seen enough, we decided then to call it a day. It was lunchtime so we again decided on a Subway sandwich for lunch - they are delicious! Then we were all set for the Lion King, we made our way to the Lyceum, via Covent Garden Market - saw some funny street performers there, just a pity we didn't have time to see more but we'd a performance to catch at 3:00pm. Come 3 o'colck, we were sitting comfortably (in the front row) and waiting patiently for the performance to begin. I'm not a fan of either musicals or The Lion King but I really enjoyed the show - the music, the costumes and the performers were all absolutely excellent, far better and much more enjoyable than I expected, so both Marlyn and I enjoyed it, Caitlyn absolutely loved it - she was spellbound for the whole performance - the tickets were worth it just for the look on her face! The whole performance lasted approximately 3 hours, though that included an intermission, that said, it didn't seem that long - even though we were listening to the music of Elton John!

We left the theatre and decided it'd be an idea to go to Picadilly Circus (well, we had been scooting up and down the Picadilly line on the underground all weekend) and let Caitlyn see it in darkness, we walked from Covent Gardens through Leicester Square to Picadilly Circus, unfortunately it was still daylight when we got there! Still, we had a look at the Statue of Eros and managed a couple of pictures - then again it was a struggle as it was really busy. Then seemed like a good idea to head back to the Hotel as it was getting late and we'd planned an early rise the next day. Once again, Subway was Caitlyn's preference for a bite to eat - I think she'd have lived off subs all weekend given the chance.

London Calling....Day One PDF Print E-mail

After months of careful planning, the big day arrived - a family weekend in London. My daughter, Caitlyn, was really excited - we'd decided to fly down and this was her first ever flight, albeit a quick one from Edinburgh to Heathrow. We reached the airport in plenty of time, my dad dropped us off just outside Departures and we checked-in, making sure Caitlyn got a window seat, then with an hour or so to kill, had a coffee (that was the start of a theme throughout the weekend - so many Startbucks and so little time to try them all), Caitlyn bought herself a little notepad - she wanted to keep a diary of her trip, it was a great idea so she ended up with a notepad, pencils and colouring pencils - just what I needed - more luggage! After an uneventful flight, we reached London, pity it was so overcast as I'm sure Caitlyn would have appreciated seeing London as we flew over it, however we did manage to spot the London Eye, which was good as we were heading there later in the day. We only there for a long weekend so had decided to go "hand luggage" only. It worked out well, we were able to step off the plane and make a quick getaway towards the underground. Then spoke to one of the guys at the underground "info" office who told us the "Oyster Card" was the best option for a cheap and hassle free way to use public transport, I'd recommend them, they're reasonably priced and easy to use on ALL public transport! But the best news was that under 11's travel free when with an adult! Caitlyn scooted around London for 4 days without paying a penny for the pleasure, so kudos to London Transport for that one! Tickets in hand, Caitlyn,Marlyn & Benwe headed for the tube and half an hour later reached Hammersmith Station. We'd booked our hotel months in advance and chosen Hammmersmith as it wasn't too near the city centre, yet still within easy reach of "the attractions" and I'd stayed in the area before whilst working at "The Ark" (seen ITV's Primeval? That's the big glass building the primeval team operate from!) Anyway, reached our hotel early afternoon and checked in before having a quick(?) lunch at Pizza Hut, pizza for Marlyn and Myself and Caitlyn decided on Chicken and potato wedges, and we all had the salad option, just for that healthy touch! Then we jumped back on the tube to head for "The London Eye", discovered Big Ben just outside the the underground and walked over Westminster Bridge to get to the eye. I was surprised it was as big - each of the car's can hold 40 punters! But we got a great view of the city, even though the weather was a bit overcast and definitely rainy! So after a half hour queue, we finally go on - though the eye doesn't stop, it just moves really, really slowly and you have to hop on as it goes past. The ride is approximately 40 minutes, though it doesn't exactly feel like a ride! The thing moves so slowly it's almost impossible to tell you are going round, great fun though, and a great place to start a weekend - we could see all of London and point out some of the obvious attractions to our daughter, who was enjoying herself immensely! The photo shows The Houses of parliament and Big Ben taken from The London Eye, when we were at the highest point - and Marlyn even managed to get a red London bus in the picture, just for that authentic tourist snap sorta deal!

It was back to the hotel after that, though not without drama, Hammersmith tube station was closed due to a fire and we'd to get off at Baron's Court, the station before Hammersmith and walk a bit further, disaster struck when the heel came off Marlyn's shoe, she was struggling anyway, her comfy shoes turned out to be the opposite and her feet were killing her! So we then hailed a cab and took it to the Hotel. I stopped at Subway for a nice foot long sub (or 3!) before going in and having a bite to eat with Caitlyn and Marlyn. I took a walk down the street and found a JD Sports where I bought Marlyn a nice pair of comfy trainers - she finally gave in and put a decent pair of walking shoes on (the London fashion, according to Caitlyn, is jeans and trainers!). After that, it was time for an early night, the only thing left to do was for Caitlyn to complete day 1 of her diary, of course!
